Understanding it

Intercostal neuralgia is nerve pain that follows the path of the nerves running between the ribs. It brings sharp, sometimes band-like pain around the chest or ribcage that can flare with breathing, twisting or pressure.

Once a doctor has ruled out cardiac and other serious causes, acupuncture is a gentle, effective option to calm the irritated nerve and the tight muscles around the ribs.

Symptoms we treat

If any of these sound like your experience, acupuncture is worth a conversation. This isn't a diagnosis — your first visit is.

Sharp rib pain
Stabbing or burning pain following the line of a rib.
02
Worse with breathing
Deep breaths, coughing or laughing aggravate it.

04
Tender to touch
Specific sore spots along the ribs or spine.
05
Worse twisting
Turning the torso or reaching flares the pain.
06

After muscle strain, injury, or a shingles episode.
How it helps

Why acupuncture works here

Three layers at once — local, segmental, and central — chosen for what your body is asking for.

Supports the nerve
Needling along the affected segment and the muscles between the ribs releases tension and supports the nerve.
Restores circulation
Treatment improves circulation around the irritated nerve, helping the sharp pain settle.
Calms the pain
Acupuncture modulates the pain signal at the spinal segment, easing the band-like ache.
